The First Indian sound Flim

Alam Ara was the first Indian talkie – that is, the first Indian sound film. Until the release of Alam Ara, only silent movies
were being released in India. Alam Ara was released in 1931. Alam Ara means ‘World’s best jewel’. The film was directed by Ardeshir Irani.
The film was advertised with a tag line
All living!Breathing!100% talking!” Alam Ara was a period Fantasy The aging king of
Kamarpur had two queens and the rivalry
between the two queens as to whose son would inherit the throne was the bone of contention. The film also depicted a love story between a prince and a gypsy girl. It was based on a Parsi play written by Joseph David.
The film had music by F.M. Mistri and B. Erani. All the Songs in the flim were hit
the most prominent of them being “De de khuda ke naam per”, sung by actor Wazir Khan. He played the role of a fakir in the flim.
(actors had to be singers too in those days).
Best studios were not available during those days. Also, there were no noise proof
studios. So the shooting of the film was carried out during nights when calmness prevailed. Songs were not pre-recorded. While the actors-cum-singers sang, harmonium and tabla were played at a hidden place nearby. Since Alam Ara was the first Indian sound film, the film makers had an added responsibility – they needed actors who knew the language! The film was released at the Majestic Cinema in Mumbai. People thronged to view the movie. Police aid had to be summoned to control the crowds!
The film was ‘full-house’ for eight
consecutive weeks upon its release! Unfortunately there is not even a single copy of the film today…

A Tribute to Stephen Hawking

World famous physicist Stephen Hawking passed away on
March 14, 2018, leaving behind a rich legacy.
Hawking had a rare early-onset slowprogressing form of motor neurone disease that gradually paralyzed him over the decades. But he was fiercely independent and unwilling to accept help or make concessions for his disabilities. He preferred to be regarded as “a scientist, a popular science writer and above all a normal human being with desires, drives, dreams and ambitions like others”.
Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, which happened to be the 300th death anniversary of Galileo. In his long career in physics, Hawking received an incredibly impressive array of awards and distinctions. In 2009, Hawking was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the highest civilian honor of the United States of America. Stephen Hawking was best known for his work on black holes, the dense structures in the universe that remain one of the puzzling subject in Cosmology
The most surprising facet of Stephen
Hawking was that of being the author of a children’s book. In 2007, Hawking and his daughter Lucy collaborated to write the book ‘George’s Secret Key to the Universe’.        The story is about a young boy, George, who is highly tech-savvy. He befriends neighbors, one of whom is a physicist with a computer that turns out to be most powerful computer in the world! It offers portals to see and enter into outer space! The book was the first of its series and the second one was released in 2009 titled ‘George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt’.
Known for his wit and humour,
Hawking has also appeared in various TV shows and talk shows such as ‘Good Morning Britain, Late Night with Conan, Larry King Live’ etc…
       The Theory of Everything’ (released
in 2014) – an Oscar nominated biopic on Hawking portrays his life and relationships before, during and after his diagnosis of the rare disease at the age of 21. The movie had won Academy Awards and
Golden Globe Awards. Hawking provided his own voice for the movie.
Stephen Hawking was the best and
possibly the most admired, scientist in the world. It was not without reason that he was compared to Albert Einstein!
